EP 24 | A DJ Saved My Life w/ Gabrielle Kwarteng

March 5, 2018

In this week’s episode we interview Gabrielle Kwarteng (Qwar-ting), a DJ hailing from NYC. Her skills take listeners on a trip around the world as she invokes Japanese disco, Brazilian funk, and Ethiopian jazz. She also mixes today’s most identifiable disco, funk and soul hits. Gabrielle's mission is to teach listeners about the different forms of music from around the world. And the last thing you want to do is put Gabby in a box. She plans on taking her skills to the big screen.. But you will have to listen to hear more about that...

During our discussion we talked about the word “female” and what that looks like in a male dominated music industry. We also asked Gabby, how her world travels have influence her taste level of music. As a first-generation Ghanaian-American, Gabby taught the Chixx about the significance of the afro beats movement. She also discusses how the female voice is somewhat silenced in that genre of music. Plus, why the hell China banned hip hop culture from all televised programming. Even on YouTube!! What is up with that??

Want to know more about Gabby??

Listen to her live every Saturday at the SOHO Grand Hotel!
